I have learned everything I know about photography from online resources – mainly YouTube. Through watching videos I not only learned about how to shoot manually, how metering works, when to use which type of focus mode but I also learned about composition, history of photography and about various famous photographers and their work
I have created a list of content that I have enjoyed the most, watched repeatedly and picked-up something new every-time. Pay no attention to the order and dive in on whatever interests you the most as I am sure if not that video there are few that comes in suggestions might be just what works for you.
One thing you’ll notice is most of these videos are about the ‘art’ of photography and you’ll only see gear mentioned when it is specifically required to do that job. So in no particular order the list goes as below.
- Eileen Rafferty
I have watched few of Eileen’s seminar in B&H’s channel, as she talks about various topics from Black & white photography, art influence in photography to improving photography through critique. From her seminars you’d learn a lot about history and evolution of photography and get a lot of information about composition and creativity.
- Adam Marelli
This is another talk which focuses on composition a lot and also relates art influences in photography. I have thoroughly enjoyed this and have watched it a few times now.
- Jerry Ghionis
Jerry is an amazing photographer who utilizes available light and surroundings in many creative ways. His portfolio is stunning and in this talk and another talk tilted ‘Posing everyone’ he shares a ton of information about using light creatively and about compositions. He also explains metering in quite detail and in easy to understand manner.
- Charles Glatzer
This is another excellent seminar by a very good photographer and teacher. You may have to skip first 25mins or so as he mainly speaks about his gear due to his affiliation with Canon. He speaks in depth about exposure and metering techniques in wildlife photography. His other talks in B&H’s channel are worth watching too.
- Arthur Morris and Denise
If you are like me and into bird photography then this talk covers a lot of things about photographing birds. They talk about from gear required for bird photography to various camera setting to get different kind of shots and many other useful gems for a beginner.
- Wildlife Inspired
Wildlife inspire channel and in particular this talk is very good for beginner bird photographer. Scott and Ray have few other videos about bird photography as well in this channel and Ray’s own channel is full of content related to bird photography as well. I love their talk with Georgina Steytler who is one of Australia’s top wildlife photographer/conservationist in my opinion.
- Art of Photography – Artist series
Ted Forbes has another great channel about history of photography and his artist series features mini documentaries about past and present masters of photography. Through his channel I have found few of my favorite photographers. His photo assignments are worth checking out too.
Though his recent content has moved more towards gear reviews (due to this being his main source of income now I believe) his old content is worth binging over and over again. There are videos about film photography, about compositions, about developing your own film and many others.
Please drop a comment if you have enjoyed any one of these. There are few more people to share but probably in another post.
